Mobility - World

The mobility instruments of the Scientific Research Fund - FNRS allow a researcher from the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, under certain conditions, to travel abroad (OUT mobility), or for foreign researchers to carry out stays of limited duration in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation (IN mobility).

These FNRS mobility instruments allow FWB researchers to carry out research and share knowledge around the world. The FNRS also administers global travel grants for the SofinaBoël Fund and Wallonie Bruxelles International.

Stay abroad/Workshops or summer courses (OUT)

A researcher who wants to go abroad, in or outside Europe, to acquire, in a laboratory, new knowledge in terms of research and new techniques or in order to facilitate a fact-finding mission, can request compensation from the FNRS for transport and accommodation costs.

  • Persons concerned : researchers from the Wallonia-Brussels Federation attached to one of the eligible institutions (see Appendix A in the regulations + eligibility conditions articles 2 and 3 of the regulations).
  • Object : a researcher who wants to go abroad, for example to acquire new knowledge in a colleague's laboratory, can receive financial assistance for the planned stay.
  • Procedure : submit the request 2 months before the date of a stay in Europe, 3 months before that of a stay outside Europe using the form available online on the e-space platform, accessible at the address https://e-space.frs-fnrs.be.

Scientific meeting abroad (OUT)

A researcher who wishes to go to a conference, in Europe or outside Europe, and who presents a communication or poster accepted for presentation by the conference organizers, can request compensation from the FNRS for transport costs.

  • Persons concerned : researchers from the Wallonia-Brussels Federation attached to one of the eligible institutions (see Appendix A in the regulations + eligibility conditions articles 5 and 6 of the regulations).
  • Object : Facilitate the presence of the researcher at meetings of a clearly scientific nature, involving the presentation and discussion of contributions or original reports. The researcher may receive financial assistance for their travel to the conference location (round trip).
  • Procedure : submit the request 2 months before the start date of the scientific meeting in Europe, 3 months before that of a scientific meeting outside Europe using the form available online on the e-space platform, accessible at the address https://e-space.frs-fnrs.be.

Scientific stay grant (IN and OUT)

A researcher who wishes to complete a scientific stay IN (reception of a foreign researcher within one of the FWB university institutions) or OUT (stay of an FWB researcher abroad) as part of research work financed by the FNRS or one of its Associated Funds, for a period of one to three months.

  • Persons concerned  :
    • researchers from the Wallonia-Brussels Federation participating in a program financed by the FNRS or one of its associated funds (OUT).
    • foreign researchers visiting a laboratory in FWB as part of a program financed by the FNRS or one of its associated funds, (IN).
  • Object :
    • As part of the Scientific Stay Grant (OUT), the researcher can receive financial assistance for transport and accommodation costs.
    • As part of the Scientific Stay Grant (IN), the visiting researcher can receive financial assistance for stay costs.
  • Procedure : The promoter of the research agreement supported by the FNRS or its associated funds, submits the request, by email, 2 months before the start date of the stay using the appropriate form.

Scientific missions (IN and OUT)

Release from teaching duties of a permanent researcher at a FWB (OUT) university or invitation of a permanent foreign researcher occupying an equivalent position to stay at a FWB (IN) university.

  • Persons concerned  :
    • Permanent representatives of the FNRS (qualified researcher, research supervisor or research director), as well as the first assistants and project managers of an FWB university hired for an indefinite period
    • Academic staff (in particular Professor, Lecturer, etc.) of an FWB university hired for an indefinite period,
    • Permanent foreign researchers occupying an equivalent position, invited to stay at an FWB university.
  • Object  : Allows the researcher to release himself from any educational obligation, for a maximum period of 12 months, non-renewable, to devote himself full-time to research.
  • Procedure : Requests must be sent to the FNRS exclusively by the Belgian academic authority concerned, via the appropriate form and by email to the address mobilite_congres@frs-fnrs.be before Monday March 3, 2025 at the latest.

SofinaBoël Fellowship (OUT except USA)

These outgoing mobility scholarships are sponsored by the SofinaBoël Fund for Education and Talent via the King Baudouin Foundation. They aim to finance research stays of 6 or 12 months abroad and are intended for doctoral students affiliated with a Belgian university. The stay must take place during the doctorate. All destinations are eligible except the USA. The amount of these grants amounts to €1,650/month to which is added a flat rate of €1,000 to cover travel costs between Belgium and the country of destination.

  • Eligible researchers : doctoral students benefiting from a paid affiliation (100%) to a Belgian university and having obtained a Master's degree (MA or MSc) after November 1, 2021.
  • Object : this instrument allows you to carry out a research stay of 6 or 12 months abroad during the 2026-2027 academic year.
  • Eligible destinations : All destinations are eligible except the USA.
  • Sustainability:  The SofinaBoël Fund for Education and Talent attaches great importance to united Nations Sustainable Development Goals . Applicants are asked to consider these policies when planning their searches.
