The WEL Research Institute

THE WEL Research Institute supports strategic research of excellence within its departments with a view to promoting disruptive innovations for impact in the fields of health and sustainable transition.

It has two departments:

WELBIO (Walloon Excellence in Life Sciences and Biotechnology) which supports strategic fundamental research of excellence in the life sciences with a view to promoting discoveries towards industrial applications in the field of health. See the 37 current WELBIO programs  ;

WEL-T (Walloon Excellence in Technology), which supports strategic research of excellence in engineering, chemistry and physics with a view to promoting disruptive innovations for industrial applications aimed at sustainable transition. See the 14 current WEL-T programs.

 

The WEL Research Institute’s missions are:

  1. Stimulate the international presence of Wallonia in the areas of the WEL Research Institute;
  2. Develop an autonomous inter-university structure which creates a stable and stimulating environment for strategic fundamental research of excellence, non-oriented and pre-translational, in the fields of the WEL Research Institute in Wallonia;
  3. Conduct strategic fundamental research activities of excellence, non-directed and pre-translational;
  4. Develop rigorous selection and evaluation processes based on excellence;
  5. Actively contribute to the training of WEL Research Institute researchers;
  6. Develop technological transfer of results from research funded by the WEL Research Institute, primarily in Wallonia;
  7. Promote collaboration with industry, ensuring the transfer of technology and knowledge as a priority to the industry established in Wallonia;
  8. Promote industrial activities in Wallonia in the areas of the WEL Research Institute.

The Fund for Strategic Fundamental Research (FRFS)

THE  Fund for Strategic Fundamental Research (FRFS), a specialized FNRS fund, finances excellent fundamental research in these strategic areas. Calls are managed by the FRFS.
