International projects

The significant added value of collaborative research translates into more visible scientific publications, greater scientific impact and the integration of more ambitious projects. This is why the FNRS wishes to provide a framework conducive to the development of international research. The partnerships developed by our researchers also represent beginnings for the preparation of large-scale projects at European and international level.

Multilateral research projects – PINT-MULTI

PINT-Multi allow the financing of complete projects (personnel, equipment, operations, mobility) on the basis of a multilateral project between a researcher from the FWB and those from other partner agencies of the call.

Since 2011, the FNRS has actively participated in international calls in all areas. The vast majority of these calls come from European networks, in close collaboration with the European Commission and are focused on strategic themes, or major societal challenges.

All eligibility conditions can be found in the regulations PINT-MULTI

Bilateral research projects – PINT-BILAT-P

PINT-Bilat-P allows the financing of complete projects (personnel, equipment, operation, mobility) on the basis of a bilateral project between a researcher from the FWB and that of an FNRS partner agency.

All eligibility conditions can be found in the regulations PINT-BILAT-P

Collaborative research FNRS – FRQ (Wallonia-Brussels Federation – Quebec)

The F.R.S.-FNRS has launched PINT-Bilat-P calls for bilateral research projects with the Fonds de Recherche du Québec. These calls are part of a desire to develop strategic partnerships. This bilateral research program aims to create leverage for scientific excellence and to bring researchers from the Wallonia-Brussels Federation and Quebec to develop innovative joint research projects. After calls in 2016, 2018 and 2021, the F.R.S.-FNRS and the FRQ launched a new call on July 26, 2024.

6 new innovative joint projects will be funded

Weave Initiative

The pan-European Weave initiative ( https://weave-research.net/) was launched in December 2020 by European research funders to support excellent cross-border collaborative research projects. By putting proposals through a single review process, Weave aims to simplify the submission and selection procedures for collaborative research proposals that involve researchers from up to three European countries or regions. Weave is implemented through existing bottom-up funding channels for basic research (with corresponding deadlines and conditions) at participating funding agencies. There are therefore no additional restrictions regarding the thematic axes of research.

WEAVE

A WEAVE allows the financing of personnel, equipment and operations on the basis of a bi- or trilateral project between one or more researchers from the FWB and those from other partner agencies of the F.R.S-FNRS as part of the Weave initiative.

Thus, researchers from the Wallonia-Brussels Federation can participate in calls for projects from European partner agencies of the FNRS as part of the Weave initiative. In this case, if the proposal submitted is selected by the partner agency, the FNRS will cover the budget of the French-speaking Belgian part.

In practice, in 2026, researchers from the Wallonia-Brussels Federation can participate in calls:

All eligibility conditions can be found in the regulations WEAVE .

The Weave information session was held on 23 February 2026 at 2:00 p.m. You can find the presentation and the recording of the session below.

For submission deadlines, regulations and links to the FNR, SNSF, DFG and FWO websites, consult the call directory of the FNRS.

Bilateral research mobility projects (PINT-BILAT-M)

Bilateral scientific cooperation agreements with sister institutions around the world encourage, through mobility, the emergence of joint projects between universities or research institutes of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation and those of the countries concerned. The FNRS organizes annual bilateral calls with certain sister institutions according to the PINT-BILAT-M regulation in order to finance two or three-year research mobility projects. These projects allow the financing of travel, accommodation and operating costs.

Joint funding FNRS – Wallonia Brussels International

The FNRS collaborates with Wallonie-Bruxelles International and partners abroad within the framework of calls for applications aimed at facilitating the international mobility of researchers. The FNRS intervenes, alongside WBI, in the financing of these mobility instruments.

ESS Survey

THE  European Social Survey  is a European sociological survey aimed at measuring behaviors and beliefs within a large sample of European households. The study is being carried out simultaneously in all the countries which constitute an international consortium under the aegis of City University (London).

The FNRS has financed the French-speaking Belgian part of the survey since the start of the initiative.

THE  second call for proposals from the FNRS , for funding for 2 years, renewable for 2 years subject to a favorable opinion from the aforementioned Inter-University Committee, is  open since May 30  and  will close on September 5, 2023. The link to the appeal documents is at the bottom of this page. Please note that the regulations published on 05/30 have been amended, given that the Non-doctoral Scientist and Technician categories are no longer subject to an annual ceiling.

The members of the Interuniversity Monitoring Committee of the ESSurvey project are:

  • University of Liège: Prof. Jérôme Schoenmaeckers
  • Free University of Brussels: Prof. Dirk Jacobs
  • Catholic University of Louvain: Prof. Ester Lucia Rizzi
